    On its way out?

Yesterday, My car smelt like burnt oil whilst i was on my way home from a friends house. I thought it was a one off thing or maybe i was empty?
Got home, and not long after i let it cool off, My dipstick told me it was needing more engine oil. So, no questions asked, I topped her up. But what crossed my mind was that it was topped up about a month ago (and 2 months before when it was serviced), surely, it shouldn't be needed right?
After i drove to work today, it started stinking of it again, gave it the sigh and ignored it but someone at work told me my engine may be on the way out? The engine is still running smooth, everything is par normal but ofcourse the extra burning smell in the engine bay !
Just wondering if someone who has the technical ability to tell me what to be weary of? And should i get it checked out asap in case the problem increases?

    Thanks,

    JC

Vauxhall state that oil useage up to a litre every 1000 miles should not cause any alarm...
Some drink like a fish others dont.

Check for blue smoke on startup from the exhaust that could point to engine wear

may i ask if you know why some do and some dont drink then? Is it just how every other model is built or more of a 'fault' of all vauxhalls?

And ok, i'll definitely check that the next time i start up then!

Otherwise, i have nothing to worry about yeah?

    thanks coo.

its a vauxhall "get out of a warranty claim" in the first 3 years imo

a healthy car should use no oil atall.

but mind you, its a 10 year old car which has done just under 109k miles! it was so badly looked after before i took it up, even the standard wheels were corroded badly that i had to get new ones. :P

Yeah, that was what i was thinking as the oil should be cycling through the engine, and i dont have a leak of any sort :/

age and milage shouldnt affect it tbh. a healthy engine is a healthy engine at the end of the day. my mate has a 1.4 on a v plate astra with 180k+ on and it doesnt use any oil

Hmmm, then what would be the reasons for my bad oil consumption?

....just luck of the draw when it comes to oil consumption..
Yes they state that as a get out clause !

When you consider how many thousands of astras out there, majority run okay.

...and onm the other hand...some engines prodcue more power than others....

    luck of the draw

you said it smells bad in the engine bay, it could be something silly like rocker cover gasket leaking a little, badly fitted oil filter or oil cooler also check oil cooler hoses as dont know what type of engine you have.
also check where you park vehicle for obvious oil marks on ground (if you havent already done so)
in the words of colin mcrae..
'if in doubt, flat out' ...my hero
    has a plan..
