Which Grade of oil? Mk4 2.0L DTI

Have recently purchased a 2001 2.0L DTI diesel, have done about 1000 miles and the oil on the dipstick has gone from full to half way down.

Which grade of oil shoud I be going for?

Owners Manual says 10W-30, 5W-30 or 0W-30. Bearing in mind I don't know what's already in it, does it matter if I top up with one that's not exactly the same viscosity as whats already in it?

yep i use 10w 40 on in y 2.0 DTI 2003 astra, as above it doesnt run down, i have done 10k since last oil change and havent needed to top up so far, i will change mine at 20k as the manual says they have long oil intervals 1 year or 20k miles which ever comes sooner

Yeah, mine went through a lot of oil when I had it, it went the best on Castrol GTD Magnatec 10W40 every 10k.

Vx always recommed semi-synthetic, saying that the oil is changed that frequently that it's a waste to put fully synthetic in, 10w 40 is the usual,

However since i changed from semi 10w40 t0 fully syn 5w 30 in my z20leh i've noticed it often needs topping up, so i'm going to go back to 10w 40
    Has anyone else noticed this?

It's because you're using much thinner oil. Check out the turbo section you'll get more info there, I believe oilman had a thread in there about VXR oil somewhere.
