Unhappy Help and Advice with MOT fail?

Got the call today and seems there are quite a few problems with the car, was wondering if anyone could share some light on them and the probable work and cost involved. The top 4 are self explanatory but what of the other two on the list, potential costs and work needing done?

The failure notices are as follows....

Reason(s) for refusal to issue Certificate

Offside Front All position lamps not working (1.1.A.2b)
BOTH FRONT Headlamp aim too low (1.
    FRONT Registration plate insecure (6.3.1b)
Nearside Front Tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (4.1.E.1)
Nearside Rear REAR X 2/CHALKED. Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c)
Service brake efficiency below requirements (3.7.A.9)

What are the probems there and what would they entail?

The car in question is a 1.6 mk4 Astra.

Well. you will have to get front lamps fixed, probably u better off with getting new ones or replacement from scrappys. If u fix them, their aim can be changed with a hex key(you might have a aim adjustment below the headlight switch). The registration plate might not sit properly, so get a frame for it or just try fixing it with longer bolts. also you will need a new nearside front tyre(its recomended to change both front tyres at the same time). Brake pipes would also need changing, and draining it after you change it should solve the efficiency problem aswell.
These are all easy DIY except for the brake pipes which would be a bit more dificult, and require a bit more mechanical skill.
    Hope this helps

The brake issues are the only thing worrying me as have bulbs for headlights etc.. the regi plate is just a loose screw and the tyre is not a problem.

What is the going rate to have the brake problems sorted? Not sure if it is something I could do myself although I do alot of other things on my car, feel the brakes are too important for me to mess around with.

I take it you have rear drums.

You would need to take the drum off and check whats going on in there. Maybe a problem like a leaking wheel cylinder or shoes need replacing or just adjusting.
The truth is always the truth even if you haven't realised it yet...
