Last time my power steering went was because the alternator was bust. Could be a possibility.

Just bought a astra van diesel, got home after 2 hour driving, went in for 30mins battery flat, supposed to have a new battery in, also the power steering was not working properly as i got closer to home, could my problem be a knackerd Alternator ?

i would say its probs a crap battery tbh as if its the alternator you would usually get the battery light on the dash meaning "alt not charging"

check the voltage on the battery with the engine off and with it running on idle to see what the alt is kicking out.

if its around 14-14.4 with engine on then the alt is working!

if its substantially less or more then the alt is fecked

my suspicion is the batt though but get them both checked

No lights where off, Only thing i can think of was the amp stayed on, as its got a seperate switch for it, the battery is new, and its huge, wasnt a cheap one,

I noticed when driving back, that the stereo kept switching off like it did not have enough power to stay on, and the steering became very heavey.

Also when i jumped started it at home and took it for a drive, the battery light stayed on.

Charged the battery up, re-connected it, started up, batter light stayed on. while engine running for a bit, i disconnected the live, if alternator was ok it should still run? but when i disconnected it engine cut off, so does this mean alternator is knackered?
