few short questions hopefully someone could help me with

    i drive a 2001 1.6 astra 16v
when should the cambelt be changed? mileage?
and also how much would i be looking at to get it done?
and if it did go would that be the end of the engine?

Every 40k miles for cambelt mate

Costwise, to put it into perspective. About 2 hours labour at a good garage. Parts come upto about £80 for belt, tensioner, Idler pulleys, and waterpump.

    So anything from £120-£180

.....and if it were to snap, its 90% likely to bend 2-4 valves, maybe even 6 if driven hard at time of it snapping. The followers may also be damaged too. You'd be looking at a head rebuild, skim, gasket set etc etc as above. All up... a bill of anything between £400-£800 at a garage!

Yep, 40k or 4yrs, whichever is soonest. Best getting the full cambelt kit with new rollers etc. and also changing the water pump at the same time as it is run off the belt so if it fails you need to change the belt again.

40k is just a "guide" tho

whos to say it wont go bang in the next 10k though?

If in doubt, get it changed!

    kit costs circa £65
    water pump £30
    coolant change £10

2hours labour at an independent garage although the job itself shouldnt take more than an hour.

should have a lil left over from £200 all in
