    Bore wash? piston rings leaking?

Had the car in at thorney for a service and they told me that ive got a compression problem as one of my cylinders was down to 25 psi. also told by another well recommended garage that this could be due to bore wash- a symptom of overfuelling due to a mapping problem. however said garage filled my car with the wrong oil so im hesitant to take their advise. thorney reckon its a failed piston ring also got oil leaking from front of engine and rear. (front of filter housing and exhaust manifold. anyone had such a problem before and if so what were the solutions? Facing up to the fact that this is probably gonna cost a fair bit to sort out but would appreciate some of your insights. cheers

first of all id take it to a local independent garage for more testing

wont get into the reason on a public forum but i wouldnt trust thorney one lil bit (been there done that learnt my lesson)

get a compression test kit ur self for £15 from screwfix and test it yourself then take it further

im guessin u woudlnt consider rebuilding the engine yourself? its not that hard really - just time consuming

if i had the knowledge, tools and time id give it a go. what i really need to do is find someone on here thats dismantling a z20let and go and watch them do it. i hate being dependent on garages all the time.

if one of your cylinders was down to 25psi, it would be running rough.

Thorney didnt tell me shit. another garage told me it was down TO 25 psi. the garage that tested the compression was Vrs in coventry who have got awards for best garage blah blah etc. so i passed this on to thorney and they said "nope not a mapping issue its definately something like a piston ring failure could require a complete engine strip down" Queue sinking feeling and considerably lighter wallet. i was quite annoyed with thorney to be honest after spending £££ on an "enhanced service" after opening the bonnet the K&N still looked quite dirty. And after pulling my head unit out to see where the wires for the boost gauge i asked them to fit had been connected was annoyed to see it patched into the power wires from the head unit itself. think i might take a mechanics course at night school or something. **** garages

they used the headunit to power a boost gauge jokers
what did you have done on the car at TMS one of the maps put on ??
if they have flashed a map on the car it can cause one of the piston lands to crack
