    Bristol & Bristolians

Yeah, I am a proud Bristolian - born and bred!
BS3 to BS5 representing haha. A Red living in the land of Gas!

One thing I can't understand is why do people from outside the city think that we pronounce our city as "Brizzle"?!?
    Because we don't.
Even with a broaaad Bristolian accent the word 'Bristol' never comes out as 'Brizzle', or even 'Bristle'.
Is there some form of conspiracy going on by people jealous of our great city who are trying to make out that we can't speak proper?

Is there a city in the UK that offers more to its residents than Bristol?
    I think not.

This is because many many MANY moons ago the BBC did a series of TV programs called , something like "Crec Brizzol" ( Correct Bristol). In the said program it told you the meaning, derivation and pronunciation of the Bristol Dialect.

The one I remember most is the use of small bits of rubber laid across the (supposedly) large noses of Bristolians to prevent the landing on of birds. These bits of rubber developed into pieces of hollow tubing about 6" long which some bright spark thought would be a good idea to put together to enable the watering of gardens.

The short pieces of rubber tubing came to be known as a"guard nose".

Having lived in Bristol for 3 years as a student I always thought the term Brizzle was just a more 'fun' way of saying Bristol. E.g. "You out in Briz tonight?" "Shizzle ma fizzle I'm back in Brizzle...fo shizzle!"

I have never heard of the name being used to mock your accent?

the word 'Bristol' never comes out as 'Brizzle', or even 'Bristle'.
Brizzle no, but Bristle and Bristol sound nigh on identical?
It's like a Londoner saying "We say it as London and it sounds nothing like Lundun"

Gotta love regional accents... Somerset, or "Zummerzet" cracks me up. The phrase "Where you to?" I mean, sorry... but pardon? I line down here now, I usually combat the language barrier by speaking in the fastest, broadest Fife accent I can muster... usually keeps conversations with locals short and sweet!
