Opcom or Tech2? and where 2 buy?

I am having problems with my astra juddering and loosing power randomly. I called my local vauxhall dealership only to find out they charge £105.75 for a 1hour diagnostic check. But they still cant guarantee to find the correct fault which is really s**t.

I have therefore decided to buy either opcom or tech2 and try and determine the fault myself as I am confident it must be a valve or sensor. I know nothing of them other then that I will need a laptop, software and cable/adapter. I am reasonably computer literate so running the software shouldn't be an issue but im not sure which is the better to buy and where best to buy it from?

There seems to be over 100 of these available on ebay as well as other online retailers and would appreciate a point in the right direction.

Sorry I can't help you as I have never used one of these things but I too am thinking of buying one. I'm also just wondering what one would be best to go with, Tech II or OP-Com...

As far as I am aware you cannot buy Tech2, but op-com is readily available on places like eBay.

TECH2 is what Vauxhall use and costs in the region of £5K

Opcom will be your only option seeing as your car uses OBD1 technology and the majority of the handheld devices on the market are OBD2 which didnt come into play for Petrol models until 2000 (2004 on Diesels)

The only realistic option is opcom - should come in at about £30 for the full kit and of course the cost of a laptop if u dont already have one.

The link u posted above is listed as only being for CANbus models (this is the latest technology used in modern vehicles from around 2004 onwards)

Whereabouts are u located? maybe a local member could help u out for the timebeing and then decide if opcom is for you after seeing theirs in action?

OR alternatively, clean out your throttle body and replace the EGR valve!!!!

but if u get someone with opcom they can accurately test the EGR to see if thats the cause which it certainly sounds like to me.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Gerodie Bandit thank you so much for pointing out that ebay listing is unsuitable for my car otherwise I would have wasted £50.

I am happy to spend £30 to £40 as a trial and error rather then the £105 vauxhall want for 1 check up. I have already blanked off the egr but not sure how to clean the throttle body. The flap on the top of the throttle body is really stiff to try and keep open, unless of course i am doing something wrong.

Any suggestions on which opcom I need or will any be ok?
