    Exclamation key won't turn? 'ignition barrel' on the way out?

    don't know what part of the forum to post this in...so ill try here first :P

    recently bought a 2001 Astra Coupe turbo. Lovely car and has driven amazingly in the very short time I've had it.

    Pulled out from work today and drove 30 yards to halfords to get some cleaning stuff for the car. so parked up, was only gone for 2 mins. Came back put the key in the ignition anddddddd....wouldn't turn.. at all. Tried wiggling the steering wheel but it completely refused to turn and if i'd put any more pressure turning it I'm sure the key would of snapped or the steering lock would of broke.

    The guy from the RAC turned up after about an hour and said 'oh thats wierd ive just come from unjamming someones ignition barrel on exactly the same model car' so i thought awesome hes going to fix it easily. 15 mins later hes still trying to unjam it. Anyway he managed to get it unjammed after 20 mins or so by putting a load of WD40 in the barrel and on the key, wiggling for a while - rinse n repeat. I kept doing it myself when I got in but I'm worried the barrel is going to completely seize. It turns quite easily now using my method of giving the key a slight tap as I put it into the ignition (sounds abit wrong I know)

    How much ££ roughly does it cost for a replacement. I've read you can get a barrel to match your key or have a new set of keys. The first one sounds cheaper but I don't wana get ripped off! Any idea's?

    best to try a brakers, get all the locksets then change the keychips dunno if vauxhall are diffrent but it worked on my old escort lol

    my Zaf did this a few weeks ago, apparently it's common in the heat (according ot the RAC guy). the WD40 freed it up in no time, so even though it's not done it since, I carry a small can in the glovebox now.

    don't write off the barrel etc yet, it could just be getting too warm and sticking, what with the nice weather we've had lately.

    well thats reassured me abit pete! I've got WD40 in the glovebox aswell now lol. I'm gona risk not getting it repaired just yet seeing as it turns without any problems since it jammed and I really dont have the cash at the mo to get it fixed! cheers gazSi/Pete

    ^^exactly the same boat that I'm in. breakers quoted me £100 for a drivers door lock, boot lock, ignition barrel, and one key. as I have two perfectly good keys at present I wasn't going to mess about with it all and then have to get another cut.
