man charged with killing grey squirrel

I thought they are considered as pests and killing them if captured was the right thing to do

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-squirrel.html

Raymond Elliot admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, namely a grey squirrel
According to the article, you cannot drown them, but can bash them over the bonce with a blunt instrument

Since when are grey squirrels protected?

As cruel as it is drowning the squirrel, they are a pest and there is a cull ongoing at the moment.

Some may not like this, but easily 30-40 squirrels come into my garden a month, and they don't leave either.

    They're horrid little tree rats

It's a fair enough point. They are just going about their business as nature intended. We are the ones who have claimed land and reckon we can decide what does and doesnt tread on it.
You cant let them run amock either though. I suppose we should have a responsibility to deal with and relocate them properly somehow, without killing them.

I ran one over in work the other week completely by accident, he just ran out in front of my car and the week before i ran a seagull over in a minibus cos I didn't see it and he never moved quick enough. I like to think I did my part in helping to control the populus

When we do this for our own race then perhaps you have a point.

drowning isn't a fantastic way to go i must say that but greys need to be kept under control.

It's not as nature intended because they are introduced by man to the UK from the Americas, that makes them a pest since they mess up the native food web.

You can't relocate Grey squirrels either - that would be illegal. You cannot release greys into the countryside - even on those wonderfully fluffy Rolf Harris programmes don't do it.. the animal is killed after the camera stop rolling

The case in pint is about cruelty, and deliberately drowning is falls foul of animal welfare laws. Shooting, and the preferred method of poison, is OK tho
