1.6 SXI just stalling on me, help!!

    Hi there,

I have been driving my 2001 1.6sxi fine for 2 months, but the other day during my daily drive, the engine just cut out. It just about started again, but was very chuggy to work, then back home.

The trip is about 30miles round trip.

The coolant sensor came on, so I replaced that, and it worked fine for a week. I got a mechanic friend to show me how to clean the idle control valve, and it now starts, but it wont Idle consitantly. I get power as normal, but the idle drops to 5000revs and then bouces back up to about 12/15 then goes back.

The coolant sensor light pops up the most when it stalls, and I am looking for a few suggestions on the way forward.

As a side note, my exhaust is blowing a bit, and I am getting it replaced at the weekend, after I have had it diagnosed.

    i would check your

EGR Valve(search that on here, loads on em)
All the air intake pipes maybe there loose?
have you done the pedal test and got any failt codes? (do search)

I think when it stalls the lights will all luminate anyway so could be nothing to do with coolant but if you want to be sure flush the system (again i think its on the how tos)

other than that .....let the experts help you

Sounds a lot like your EGR valve. You can buy a blanking plate for it from ebay for a couple of quid and it should sort it if it is that.

Still sounds like EGR valve myself, classic symptoms.

Out of interest, if this is a Z16XE engine, then it doesn't have an idle control valve? Idle speed is ECU controlled.

I'd try a blanking plate initially - if it works, then I would replace the EGR with a Delphi branded one however many are happy to leave the EGR blanked off. You need to leave the EGR connected to the electrics though so zip-tie it securely when the blanking plate is fitted.

What section? The black plastic is a resonance chamber.

sod all that - tell us ur location and someone local with opcom can plug in their laptop and measure the accuracy and efficiency of your existing EGR valve

    id bet thats the problem

sod the blanking plates - £65 for a brand new Delphi EGR valve - 2mins to fit - DONE!

Opcom is ideal to test it first though.
