    help with engine details please

Have just got a 1.6 LS 2003 bi-fuel estate which is great.
However the temp gauge does not move from 0.
I did a search and saw an easy fix - basically its a device that sits in the hose and takes over the job of the stuck thermostat.
BUT in finding the fix its only for an 8 valve model and its been developed because of the awkward position of the thermostat.

I know its a strange question but there are loads of stamps on the engine, where is the stamp that tells me the code number?

In the log book it says Engine number - 02PL9095 but that bears no relationship to the code.

It has the symptoms of a stuck thermostat.

If its a 16v model where is the thermostat, is it in the same place as the 8 and why is the fix only for the 8.

sorry for all the questions guys.

Z16SE if its 8v (has VAUXHALL across the top of rocker)

Z16XE if its 16v (ECOTEC across the top of the removable plastic engine cover)

If its the latter 16v model then its a piece of piss to replace

Thermostat is situated at the end of the top rad hose as it enters the head at the bottom left as u look from the front

Heres a rough pic of the engine showing the Stat & CTS location (CTS screws into the stat)

Heres the replacement unit for your engine too

Heres a couple of guides on replacing the stat and flushing the rad - based on 1.8 but principle is the same - may as well do it properly instead of just replacing the stat

The quick fix for the 8v is due to the OE stat being situated behind the timing belt.......as u can imagine, not everyone wants the hassle of removing the belt to access the stat........ the 16v variants have the stat located on the exterior of the head making replacement a total doddle. Couple of bolts, a hose clip or 2, electrical connector and its off.

Got the "easy fix" for the thermostat and once you get the top hose off (mine was a bitch) the rest is fine.
Took it for a run and the temp gauge is very sensitive wavers between 80 and 90 quite a bit, unless thats the water settling down after refill.
Funny yesterday before the fix came the temp lifted and went back - only lasted for about 30 seconds so not sure if some crap had been stuck in the original stat and cleared.
The car had been sat for a while before i bought it.
Was thinking though, just suppose the original was stuck with crap and sprung into life and now have a second one, what would happen?
Am driving down to Cornwall this weekend and will be doing about 1500 miles so will see - will take some tools in case i have to remove the stat - hope not.
Heater is blowing hot now - just the job for the weather (here)
