think the diesels are smokey anyway. constantly see a white diesel and the back of the boot and bumper are always mankey, even after he washes it. After a few miles the paintwork is disgusting......

25mpg seems very low for a diesel.
    is this town driving?

couldnt tell you whats wrong, but 25mpg is very low for a diesel, even town driving.
i'd estimate that my 1.8 does roughly 25mpg around town, i wouldnt expect a diesel to drop much below 40mpg.

The black smoke is probably just the turbo burning off carbon deposits, you get that from time to time.

When was the car last serviced? If it's been a while it might well benefit from one.

Also, what's your driving style like? Thats the biggest factor.

i have a 2005 1.7 cdti 80 and i get approx 33 - 38 mpg around town so i`d say theres something not quite right there and tbh i`ve never noticed much smoke from it unless i`m really pushing her.
