    astra G 1.4 - sudden problem... HELP

    Hi everybody!

I´m new here and after reading a lot on the net about my recent problem I decided to ask here, maybe someone had the same problem before...

I just went out fro shopping and suddenly, not long after refueling my 1.4 petrol astra estate I noticed the engine light on and the acceleration became a bit jerky... It actually flashed for a few seconds when I stepped a little harder on the gas pedal. I read the fault codes (using the simultaneous pressing of the break and gas when turning the key) and got the following according to a list somewhere here in the forums:

    0204 - injector valve 4
    0302 - misfire cylinder 2

since it's a 16V engine I'm guessing injector valve 4 is on cylinder 2, right? Could this be (again!) the coil pack? Or is it really the injector? I had a coil pack problem once and I "lost" one cylinder, that was pretty obvious. This time the engine starts and idles OK but it will be jerky when accelerated. And there is the engine light always on...

I'm currently visiting Denmark and a dealership repair would burn a very deep hole in my pockets... so any help in solving this myself would be more than appreciated!!!

    THANKS!!!!

    Paulo.

I would have thought injector 4 would be on cylinder 4. May be worth clearing the codes and see which comes back. Check the plugs before spending any money though.

Hi and thanks for your very quick reply. I just checked the spark plugs and they look OK. They were changed last year when I first came with the astra estate very, very loaded and had engine complications with the EGR and the oxygen sensors. The plugs were miserable then. I mistakenly though that since it has 2 injection valves per cylinder the valve 4 would be on cylinder 2... but then that means it is giving me faults with both cylinder 2 and 4... I will maybe change the spark plugs anyway but if I need to change the injector(s) is that something that I can do myself? I dismantled to the point where I would need to remove the black plastic containing the electronics for the injectors but I don't know how this is attached... I could not remove it so I suspect something is holding it but I cannot see what...

    Help again?...

    Thanks!!!!

    Paulo.

Oh, by the way... how do I clear the codes? Disconnect the battery for a few minutes or is there any easier way? I guess I then need to reassemble what I took out and restart the engine to let the ICU detect the faults again? What a bummer... I really want to avoid a trip to the dealer here... I'm handy around machines but I first need to know where to begin...

    Thanks again!

    Best wishes,

    Paulo.

pcspinheiro - there are some users on this board who can reset the codes for you and someon may live close to you and then there is no need to go to the dealer. I had the code 0355 on my car and the EML came on. No the EML light is off but the code still registers when you press the pedals.

I have disconnected the battery and left it like that for 1 hour while I was fiddling with my stereo and installing a new cigarte lighter outlet (bought from GeordieBandit) as the standard one is rubbish. Connected th battery back up and the code was still there.

If you don't want to go a dealer or there are now forum members near you, you could go to an indipendanat garage and ask if they have a diagnositic kit such as Kiwi-Fit
Be an optimist - at least until they start moving animals in pairs to Cape Canaveral.

    Hi again!

Will one of these tech2 readers help me diagnose my problem (and future ones) better?

    Hi again.

Just wanted to leave my final note regarding my problem. I reassembled all the parts I had removed and disconnected the battery for a couple of hours (well, I was doing something else in the meantime and forgot about it...). When powered up again the astra was running fine, better than before actually! And the engine service light was gone and it was running so smooooth. Not bad for 186.000 Km. The electric windows did act up a little, wouldn't go up by themselves when you press the button longer but that also got somehow fixed on it's own.

    Thanks for all our help!!!

    Best,

    Paulo.
