Exclamation Does anyone have an idea what this is..

Hi everyone i drive a mk5 astra 1.6 sxi sporthatch. It drives really good i dont have any problems apart from one thing: after i drive the car for a long period of time lets say 30mins-1hr and when im in second gear and sometimes in first the car makes a screeching noise when i press the gas for a few seconds then it stops. Does anyone know what could be the problem
    Thanks

May be an aux belt slipping? This could be due the the heat after running the car for a while.

    Sounds good to me!

Try changing gear at high revs letting the clutch out pretty quick and see if it does it then? Thats when you can notice them slip the most.

Sorry to sound like a noob but what is an aux belt? isit something major would it require me to get it fixed? It doesnt happen often so im not too bothered if its minor. And Jafo666 it made that noise only at low revs..

Nothing to worry about the aux belt usually runs the power steering pump (unless its electric) A/C, Alternator etc, if its slipping it may need a new belt which isnt very expensive but if it also needs a tensioner there quite a bit more!

fan belt then? usually at low revs.

just needs a tighten, easy job. Garage wouldnt charge much if your not sure how to do it urself.

Doesn't the astra have a self adjusting tensioner therefore it can't be tightened manually.

It may be a stretched belt or your tensioner may be knackered requiring a new one.

if ur under the impression its the tensioner (and just for the record it is indeed self tensioning so u can scrap that oh so "tighten it .......its an easy job" bullshit)

anyway, whip off the aux belt - should just be a 15mm or so ring spanner on the tensioner bolt to swing it out the way and slip the belt off

run the engine without the belt to see if the noise stops

ONLY DO THIS SHORT TERM as without the belt fitted, the alternator will not charge and subsequently the EHPAS (electro hydraulic power assisted steering) will not function

should at least give u an idea if the tensioner is the cause

obviously if the noise goes - bingo!

if the noise remains, whilst the belt is removed then u have another cause im afraid
