    Fuel Economy Tips??

Just wondered if you guys had any good tips to save on fuel

its odd....a full tank does me like around 300 miles 50 litres....i dunno if its good or not, but it varies with my driving speeds accelerations, body weight etc.....

    im running about 21 miles to the gallon ( 5 litres) on a 98 1.6 16v

another poster said he was getting 80 miles for a tenner..i work out im getting maybe 40 miles..

    any tips?

    cheers dudes

You must have a major heavy foot for that mpg!!

I get around 30 mpg around town out of my 1.6 8v estate which has a heavy boot install. Usual tips are only fill half a tank to save a bit of weight, change gear at 2.5k revs, get rid of unneeded weight etc.

Is 21 mpg around town, stuck at lights all the time, or is that on a clear run on motorway?

My 1.6 LPG Zaffy will do 29mpg easily when held at 70mph. But will drop down a lot if I'm pottering around town, stuck at lights all the time and slowing down/speeding up lots around chicanes, speed bumps etc.

One trick is, when on a clear motorway, use a saw tooth patten to you acceleration; that is foot to floor briefly until you hit ~75mph odd, then foot totally off and cruise until you drop to ~65mph, then floor it again back up to ~75mph, repeat etc.
The principal being the difference in gas used flooring it and foot half down, is only small, and is more than made up for time your foot it off. When you're foots off, the engine will often cut fuel completely, or at very least, just use enough to keep it going. Obviously, don't do this round town or on a busy road with other behind you. I've found this can get my avg mpg edging up towards 32mpg.

I find my 1.8 astra is very capable of being in 5th gear at 25mph (minimum) if your just going around town change gear before 2000rpm.

i get 150miles to half a tank -ish.

thats probly worser for your engine mate... yes most people say the lower the better but thats just putting undue stress on the engines as 5th isnt meant to be used that low!

if your in 5th and pootling along at 25 and then leave it in gear and floor it its way worse for your fuel economy than having it in 3rd and then progressivly accelerating... when i had my 1.8 i would leave it in gear the gear at the speed with the car feeling most comfortable... 20 in 3rd 30 in 4th and 40 in 5th... i got 350 to a tank even round town just employing that rule in my driving

i understand what your saying. I tend not to accellerate in 5th at 30, if i wanted to accellerate id drop it into 3rd.

when im just going round town (ie no real need for accelleration) i have it in 5th at 25-30mph. the engine isnt straining because im just rolling more or less. . .
