Any gen on Peugeot 106's? The 1.1 engine.

Brother is 17 & has his test next month & got wind of a 106 1.1 for sale cheap through a young lad he works with.

You can see the disaster coming can't you.

Bearing in mind i got insurance quotes for him on group 1 cars the other month & they were at 3k.

He's banging on about it so he's already decided he's buying it before he's even seen it

4 months test left .... has had work done to it to get it through the test is the word
    Tax exp in October ish

I tell him to get the reg plate so i can get quotes. He said he will ....

....& then like everything else with him, he just never gets back to me. His choice.

Views it today & gets the price from 450 to 350 on an S plate with 114k.

Comes home & it's alloy wheels & non standard exhaust.

    Trim is "Zest 2" & it's a 3 door.

Going to have fun with the quote then.

Haven't seen under the bonnet so no idea if the engine has been tampered with (though i suspect it's been ragged to within an inch of its life)

    £3.5k quote.

Oh and the test suddenly isn't 4 months remaining, it expires end of August.

My brother has his driving test 8th July. So if he passes first time, then he has a month & a bit of test

To get it through, it MAY (or may not) need a lot throwing at it, so that's even more potential cost so soon.

IMO he's rushed into this with his eyes shut.

Any gen info on these motors?

I had a Citroen AX, which i believe is similar (?) & it lasted 6 months & was a bag of cack.

Just had a disagreement with my dad & wondering who's right

Tax expires end of November. My brother is now the owner. He can't drive as he's no licence (courtesy of his test being next month).

I said, but admitted i wasn't 100% sure, that it'd have to be declared SORN as he can't take it on the road. IF i'm wrong then i already admit i'm not 100% on this one.

I then told him that as it's not insured, then if it's nicked tonight he has no leg to stand on.
My dad tells him that we can both drive it (my dad & I). I ask what this has to do with the price of fish & tell him that the car has to be insured for us to be able to drive it with the owners permission.
Oh yeah says he. Since when?

Told him i wasn't sitting there arguing all night, to which he told me not to sit there & argue then & walked off.

Hoping i'm right, but then you always doubt yourself lol.

Oh & there's oil in the water. Apparently the head gasket has just been sorted as well as other issues. The water cap underside is well lubed with oil & oil is all over the resevoir tank.

& the drivers door shut's full of mud

insurance wise, mine insures me to drive any car whether its insured or not 3rd party only, the car wont be on insurance database so you highly risk being stopped, every insurance company is different and mine says specifically that the car does not have to have its own insurance for me to covered 3rd party. you've normally got to pay extra as an option on your insurance for such cover.
106s are horrendous to drive, brake pedal and clutch too close together!
being a 1.1 with such mileage its on its last legs, as these 1.1 are normally good for 100k, unless its been very well cared for!

the car does not have to be sorn unless the tax has expired!

If its taxed til nov then it wudnt need to be sorned until then, thats if you didnt tax it again that is...

As for insurance the car itself has to be insured before any other driver can drive it on there insurance(if you have that cover on ure own policy that is)

incorrect, depends on the insurance company policy, as long as the drivers policy covers, then the car doesnt need be insured, but worth carrying your certificate to prove incase of stop or vehicle will be seized
the part in my insurance says the following in reference to driving other vehicles
Third Party cover whilst you are driving another vehicle is not generally available except wheni) the vehicle does not belong to you and is not hired to you under a hire purchase agreement and(ii) there is no other insurance policy which insures you and(iii) the vehicle is not being driven to secure its release following seizure by, or on behalf of, any government or public authority. (See Section A: Third Party Liability of the Policy.)

It'll be kept on a secure car park off road. This car park is open to certain members of the public (it's a marina car park & boaters will have keys to the car park, as well as us).

Just been out now & he's up & down said car park with his mate in the passenger seat.

At least if my front end gets hit then that's a new front end for free.

Agreed. I only drove it up the top end of the car park & back & that was my issue with the pedals. Poor.

If anything like the Citroen AX 1.1 then i think that's just about when mine went. He only needs it for 12 months if he can keep his nose clean for that time that is.
unless its been very well cared for!
It really hasn't is my view. Ok it's not bashed & rusted & what not, but it's a peugeot 106 so i wasn't expecting Escort-like rust. Has a few dints though. Young lad driver too, so my view is it's been ragged everywhere as a fairly safe bet.
