Hi Guys, I have an Mk5 1.6 SXi and the brakes are not the best I've ever used.
I have replaced the brake fluid and this improved the feel (not as spongy as they were) but not the overall performance as such. Unfortunately I don't have a micrometer to tell if the minimum thickness levels have been reached or not but the milage on the car is 44K. I still think the pedal travel is a little longer than it should be, usually one pump on the pedal and then hold makes it sit where I think it should be (about 1" of travel instead of the usual 2" that a single press of the pedal gives), the hand brake is at four notches and holds ok at that, but any attempt to lock the wheels with the lever only, is a total waste of time and effort. The pads look about half worn front and rear.
So, the questions:-
1. Are the discs possibly worn beyond their limit thus giving the excess pedal travel?
2. Is the wear on the pads contributing to the problem?
3. I'm an old git these days so would a new standard set up suffice, or is there a suitable cheap upgrade available?
4. Or, are the brakes on the mk5 'H' chassis cars just cr*p?
Thanks in advance for any assistance/advice!
