    Replacing the Coupe - thoughts?

Well having just gotten off the phone to the insurers for the third time today, they've been in contact with the engineers who have the Coupe and surprise surprise they think it's going to be a write off

Can't say I'm surprised when you see the pics of the car on the transporter...

Anyway, as it looks like it's a cut & dried case I need to find a new car as I doubt I will have the courtesy car long before they call me to make me an offer.

Ideally I want to stay in the Astra fold, and have been looking at MK5s. I would need either a 5dr or an estate, and as I was quite fond of my old estate I'm leaning towards this option.

Given a choice I'd look for a 150hp 1.9 CDTi, but chances are they will prove beyond my budget, so I'm broadening the horizons. I've stumbled upon a couple of 100hp 1.7 CDTi estates within budget, so does anyone have any gen on them?

What's the 1.7 like for tuneability? Are there any tuning boxes out there, and if so what sort of power does it take them up to? Anywhere near the 150hp I'd find from a standard 1.9 would suit me perfectly Of course if they aren't that tuneable or aren't suited to a bigger car like the estate then I'll have to start looking for the 120hp 1.9!

I had a feeling all 1.7s could have a box on them except the DTI.

    Definately the cdti.

If you got the 1.7 you would only end up wanting the cdti

when I bought the car it had been stood off road for months and the bodywork was shocking. The price I paid though, I wasn't going to complain. I had a mk4 estate on my drive that I was breaking for parts, and the bonnet was in better nick than the coupe one so I swapped them over. Was in the process of picking up a new front bumper and spraying the entire front end (I do my own spraying & bodywork) ahead of the shows... looks like thats another plan shelved

thing is I don't have time to save another £1500-£2000 for the 1.9 unless I can find one dirt cheap. I do approximately 200-300 miles a week just going to work and back, and running all over the county doing Personal Training. I can't afford not to have a car, so as soon as the funds come through from the insurers I will be taking whatever money I have gathered together and buying a car within a matter of days.

there's a good thought Danny, although I don't think the missus likes them so whether I'm allowed one is a different matter entirely!
