My Astra has failed it's MOT - Help

My Astra 1.6 Club failed it's MOT today on the exhaust emissions. results below :-

Fast Idle Test CO Max limit 0.300 - actual value 1.037
Second Fast Idle Test - Max value 0.300 -actual value 1.015
Natural Idle Test - Max value 0.500 - actual value 1.133

The garage suggest its the catalytic convertor and will cost about £700 to fix.

They did also metion getting a computer on it to check for defo. Which would cost £55.

A couple of months ago the engine management light on the dash came on and a sensor was replaced on the exhaust so it seems weird that this is what the MOT has failed on.

    Any advice/ideas welcome

    Cheers

if its going to cost you that much to get a cat sorted you may aswell buy an exhaust system with a sports cat, it'll cost you less than the 700 their quoting, you get a better sound, bit more performance and it'll pass the emissions

thats a piss take it aint gonna cost £700 for a new cat....

best thing to do is get the plugs out and give them a good clean... also take the filter out your air box..
Give your car a damn good thrashing for half hour or so before you take it back in for a re-test and the emissions should be ok..
i have done this a few times with cars i dont use that often they just need to cob-webs blown out now and again.

But if it is a cat, get a local exhaust place to do it. im sure it wont be more than £150- £200
or get hold of a used cat for not a lot and fit it yourself..

    it'll probly be a mk5 then

as above tho i would reccommend giving it a good thrashing (if you can do that ) before the test, making the cat nice and hot will bring the emissions down...

    wherabouts are u located?
maybe a local member could lend a hand, have a look over it for you and take it from there

if i was local, id connect the laptop up and measure the CO2 values etc - see if anything stands out and then reset/adjust as necessary,

but the best option to be honest, would be adding a fuel additive, im a big fan of "cataclean" (available on ebay and the likes) and then giving the car a good "thrashing" as they say for an hour or so, get the cat right up to temperature, then straight in for the re-test.

id be surprised if it didnt pass.
