    Angry head gasket

hey everyone, im pretty sure my head gasket has gone, the vans going into the garage tuesday morning

does anyone know what i should expect to be paying roughly
the van still runs ok, well it turns over and idles ok not acctually been for a drive in it, its a little lumpy, and has a slighlt oil leak, no coolant and is somewhat smokey, no mayo though

    its a 2001 astravan 1.7dt

i suspect im asking how longs a piece of string here, just want a heads up so i dont get bent over and shafted

    cheers
    sam

    Hi Sam,

Just curious to know why you reckon the head gasket is gone?
You say it idles OK and no mayo, even been for a drive in it, just a little smokey and slight oil leak.

    Cheers, Paul

hi paul, i dont know really just assuming it is, its been leaking oil for a few months, and every time i top the coolant up it drains away somewhere amd i get more oil than usual leaking out so im assuming the water is going into the oil

its started having staring issues now, starts and 3 seconds later it dies with a puff of smoke out the exhaust, this happened 3 times, i topped the coolant up again then it started up ok but was ideling as though my foot was on the gas,

    thanks

    Sam
There are three ways to check for a failed head gasket, leak down test, chemical test or compression test, I have listed the tests in my order of preference.

Thats ok just find someone who will do the test for a fixed price, as you will need to know what you are dealing with before you go ahead with a fix. It may not be the head gasket but a valve problem, the result will be the same head off but you won't have any nasty surprises.

Seems a fair estimate tbh as long as he is using genuine GM parts.
