air con not working but light comes on when button pressed

i bought my car about 3 weeks ago and now the weather is hot so I tried the a/c and nothing happens. the light on the button comes on when pressed but nothing else happens. the revs stay the same. is there anything I can check to see what it could be.

The lights will always come on

First thing to do is get it regassed as it could be low on gas. If you go somewhere thats good they will then be able to say what (if anything) is wrong with it

See if the compressors clutch kicks in or not,car running at idle, get a second person to sit in car and activate switch when you request them too,you are outside, bonnet open, look down with your good eyes or with a torch aroound the alternator belt area, you should see the belt run round the ac compressor(this has silver pipes coming out of it etc),when you say press the button, look to see if the end of the pulley clicks in and out .ie starts rotating when turned on.this is the ac clutch turning on and off when you request but not this wont work if the system is low or out of refigerent(gas) and watch your bloody fingers, dont stick them down there!!

I went halfords and the guy plugged in his little pressure machine and nothing would happen. could that be because it could be very low. can some tell me where the air con is in the engine and where the valve is. the halfords guy was like 18 and couldn't find it properly so I'm hoping he might have got the wrong place. is quik fit ok for regas

Find a garage with a decent knowledge of aircon, should be £50-£60 for a full regas and system check - more aircon refill systems will pressure test for leaks on your system by default before heating the system through to remove and condensation before refilling with gas/lubricant/dye (dye to show through any leaks in the future).

Theres a few pipes to be honest, you have to know if it goes to the condenser or compressor or inside the car etc?but vaux are probly the only place unless you can find second hand ones on here
