    High pitched whine and grind

    Hi guys,

For the past few weeks, when slowing down from around 30/40mph (off the throttle, not pressing the brakes, just free wheeling so to speak) the car seems to make a high pitched whine. I have had a look around the wheel area but there is nothing catching or rubbing, and the brakes are fine.

I have also noticed (only today infact) that there seems to be only what i can describe as a broken bearing grinding noise (if that makes sense) coming from the passenger side of the car. The wheel itself seems fine (i have jacked it up and tried to give it a wobble), but could it be the wheel bearings on their way out? Or worse, could the gearbox be on its way out?

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Some brake pads on Astras are fitted with 'squeelers' which are a strip of steel rivited to the back of the brake pad then bent round to face the disc, when the pads have worn down the strip of steel rubs on the disc giving an audible warning. The noise can vary from a squeeling noise (on a good disc) to a grinding , graunching noise (on a rusty disc). Try looking at your brake pads before U go any further!!

Yeah i checked them but they were fine!

Someone mentioned to me the other day about the possibility of the alternator on its way out (bearings)?
