First time poster and I'm not good with cars so please be kind
I am a 3rd owner of a V reg year 2000 Astra (previous owner was my mother).
Basically yesterday(18th May 2010) I had to have my tyres replaced as they were showing signs of cracking on the walls and they are the originals, had no problems getting to/from the tyre place. When I got home from work around 7pm I tried to open the car via the key fob but the doors weren't unlocking I could hear the unit clicking but nothing else. Went to start the car but it wouldn't turn, all the panel lights were on but that was it. Got a jump start and all seemed fine let it run for about 10 minutes, but then I noticed a ticking comming from some where in the engine. Assumed it was oil running low so I reluctantly switched off car checked oil levels and sure enough was low, so I topped it up. Went to start car again and nothing. Got my multimetre and the display showed 0.00 (wonderfull right).
So I got a 2nd jump start and again car turned over. While car running I checked the voltages again and to my amazment the read out still showed 0.00 so that proved that battery was not getting any charge.
Considering the battery is the orginal I have ordered a new one and I will fit it when it arrives. However I am wondering if the altanator has gone, could this be the case?
