Can anyone confirm what engine I have please?

    Hello!

Yesterday the timing belt snapped on our 1.6 16V Ecotec Mk3. :-(

Most people tell me that this is (a) very bad news and that realistically (b) I should be shopping around for a recon cylinder head, as getting this fitted will most likely work out cheaper than having whatever damage has been done to our current head repaired.

Would I be right in thinking that our P-reg (1996/7) Mk3 has an X16XE type engine? Research leads me to believe that an X16XEL also exists. I've tried hunting around the engine bay for a label or badge without success.

Oh and my final question - is there anyone in Suffolk interested in doing the work?

    Cheers,

    Steve

    Hi Steve

Hmm... Do you mean that ONLY the X16XE was in the Mk3 & MK4 ? Or could my engine still be one of two models?

    Thanks,

    Steve

I think the engine number is stamped on the flat bit next to the gearbox

Every garage I've phoned in Suffolk says they're too busy to even look at it, this is turning into a nightmare! :-(

    Thanks again,

    Steve

That's an X16XEL. Not to be confused with the X16XE (different port shapes on the inlet manifold) or the X16XEL as found in the mk4.

I'm only in Norfolk and I've just crushed a perfectly good one you could have had, sorry.
