behind the steering wheel is a small hole which has a screw it in (probably a t20 torx like the rest of the car). Undo this and the controls just come out

EDIT: there are 2 holes on each side. 1 is for the controls and the other is for the airbag. You want the ones furthest out (directly below the controls)

Remove the keys & put them in your pocket for safety.
T20 Torx through the two holes on the rear of the spokes (one each side) will release the airbag.
Carefully lift off the airbag, on the rear of it you will see a yellow plug. Lift the safety catch & remove the plug. Set the airbag safely to one side.
You will see the steering wheel controls, they are secured in using a T10 Torx. Remove this & unclip the wiring plug, they will now lift out.

To refit just reverse the sequence.

DO NOT TURN ON THE IGNITION WITH THE AIRBAG UNPLUGGED.
It will trip the airbag light & you will need to get it on Tech2/OpCom to reset the light.

    What bottom trim piece?
On any Astra steering wheels I've come across you've had to remove the airbag to get at the screws holding the controls & also the wiring plug.

I was always lead to believe that the 3 screws behind all of the 3 trims were simply taken out and the controls/trim pop off on the MK5 instead of faffing with airbags.

I mean the third silver part on the wheel. I'm changing them all tonpaino black. I thought the screws behind each one just unscrewed and they came off? Can anyone confirm if I have 2 tale the airbag out. Got a mixture of responses.
    Thanks all for your help

Sorry, my mistake, thought this was a Mk4 wheel for some reason.

Ok no worries. Looking at the wheel I can only see 1 screw behind each trim

Yeah, there is, the 2 side controls with the scroll wheels on them, the screw is in the middle, but near the top.

If you have a lower spec Astra, then the bottom middle trim is not removable. I noticed when driving Ash's Club on Sunday that there is no screw on the bottom one meaning it cannot be removed.

On a seperate note, surprising how much skinnier the wheel is on the Club compared to SXi.
