    Fan attachments

Does anyone know what the coil/resistor combination is for located at the top and bottom (inside) on the rad fan?

They look like heat sensors to me except I've been told that the rad fan is turned on via the temp sender sensor...

On the inside rad fan there is one at the top behind the plug, down the bottom there is another one where the cable attaches.
On the outer fan there is only one of these fitted, none are visible when the fans are bolted to the rad.
On closer inspection, the small component looks like a thermo resistor...
