useless female has no clue what to do with possible ecu probelm

    hi,
    looking for anyones knowledge.

fortnight ago my car died, lit up like a christmas tree steering went heavy all lights on, so a friend who is good with cars said probably alternator away. it gets put into the garage who replaced alternator and said battery wasnt taking a charge so put new battery in.

car still not running they told me, they sent it to some idiot miles away as he is some sort of ecu specialist and thats whats wrong with it. week went by so i called and he said new ecu £600 quid i said no thanks, and picked car back up. surely there must be easier way.

now my engine management light is on, the car is beyond sluggish and when i dropped youngest at nursery battery light came on which i know means its not taking a charge. however is this definatley a knackered ecu which is causing battery not to charge, bearing in mind i've new alternator and battery?

boy who was supposedly a specialist said he wasnt getting right (numbers???) from ecu he was supposed to and had to activate the car manually to get it to take a charge using some sort of lamp???? please help, im loosing the head and dont know what to do??

    thanks

I'll move your post to the diesel section and hopefully someone will help out

On the MK4 you can read error codes from the engine computer on your own but unsure on the MK5 but someone will tell you

hi dave234 its been run thru the computer and is saying the evr valve is stuck open. would this cause my other problems?

car seems to start no problem, steering has been fine since new alternator fitted but battery light still keeps coming on.

The EGR valve should stay closed during warm up and under certain running conditions, if the ECU sees anything different it will throw the vehicle into limp mode to protect the engine. As far as the battery charging is concerned I think it would be a good idea to have someone check your earth connections not just at the battery but where the wires ancor to the vehicle body, Quick fit will normally do a battery drop/charge test for free to make sure the alternator/battery is still functoning properly, however you may have to accept the need for a new EGR valve but not before all the wireing connections and vacuum lines have been properly checked. I am assuming the vehicle had been serviced recently.

    Unhappy

    hi spedo,

the fault code coming up is P0621 the garage is saying its alternator again.

the egr valve has been changed but the computer shows faults still with this and a swirrel valve(??) this is nothing to do with the charging side of it im assuming, i dont know where to go from here.

if the swirl valves have gone it will show the egr valve fault. you will need a new inlet manifold which should sort it
