1.8 SXI is ins group 8E and 1.6 is 6 i think, the 1.6 can sometimes be worse on fuel than the 1.8 coz you have to rev the nuts off to get anywhere in it... but the 1.8 is a loud cruiser if your on the motorway at 80+... tax is £215 a year for the 1.8 not sure on 1.6

If it was me i'd go for the 1.8 because my 1.6 8v isn't quick enough to get me out of bed in the morning.

1.8 16v, otherwise you will spend the rest of your time owning the 1.6 16v and wishing you got the faster 1.8

I pay the same tax for my 1.8 16v as I did for my 1.6 8v. There's not too much in it insurance wise either. Driven sensibly they probably achieve a similar fuel economy as well, as a lot of time driving the 1.6 was spent with the foot to the floor. Come to think of it, why did they even make a 1.6?!?

i found insurance wise the 1.8 was hardly any more, and the 1.8 SRI wasnt much more than the SXI.
go SRI if you can afford it theres little in it fuel economy and insurance wise, but its a whole second faster to 60.

    *Stupid Qz alert*

The difference between an SXi and an SRi?

i was always told SXi was styling, and SRi was performance, however its not apparent on the MK4

Not the case. In 1.8 form they share the exact same engine. It was revised around 2001 to increase power from 113 to 123bhp but that's got nothing to do with the trim level.

SRi adds a few bits over the SXi, like a rear spoiler, electric mirrors.. but performance is unchanged.
