    Battery / Altenator Failure?

Driving along today and steering wheel gone heavy.
No power steering at all. Wipers slow which was the first sign.
But when I pulled over, the car didn't cut out at all which is what
I expected it to do. It drove just as normal! I called my dad and
I collared a guy at the petrol station across the road for some
jump leads, as it wouldn't start. But prove perfect apart from the
steering... And lights on dash: seatbelt, yellow car pic with spanner,
    ABS, traction ctrl.

    What do we think?

Battery or Altenator? Or any other ideas?

    Thanks for looking

get batt and alt checked then you will know for sure

defo one or the other judging by the symptoms

my guess is battery as from experience when all lights come on and play tricks its usually that, alt is usually just the battery light.

get em checked out (grab a multimeter if u have one) and run a few simple voltage tests with engine running/off etc

obviously check main earth points etc and battery terminals....presuming u havent fitted anything recently that could have interfered with things?

The fact it happened while driving I suspect alternator. Try to get the battery charged up overnight before you do the tests

Well yeah exactly what I thought at first, but it wouldn't start and when it did. It managed to get me home about 1.5 miles. So I figured yeah, there's no charge going into the battery, but it wouldn't have got home on just that 1 minute jump I wouldn't have thought... Am I right/wrong?

Batteries have a reserve capacity in them of about a hours driving if your being careful what you take out of it. Trying to start the engine takes alot more out of it than driving

Riggght ok. Because I did fire it up once on it's own, it drove. Turned off, then wouldn't start again. But it drove home...

Edit: and I've just read your post on ryan13's thread about altenator faults... The battery light hasn't been on at all but I don't think it was on last time we tried to start it. I.E ignition position 2

If the battery light isn't on when the ignition is on but the engines not running the alternator won;t charge. This could be down to faulty alternator, clock or a wiring fault

Ok. Thanks for your help mate. I'm off to the car now to have a bash and see what happens. How much would an altenator cost roughly? Is there anything that comes with it that will need doing? Or is it a nice simple job of swapping it over? Just before I take it to a garage and they nail my hat on lol.
