    Running Temperature 1.6 8v

    Hi all,

I have a 1.6 8v T reg astra ive had it for a year now and over the past year the temp gauge hardly moved except in summer when standing still in traffic then it would go at least half way.

The past day or so after say a 5 mile journey the temp gauge goes straight up to 80 i noticed the faster i go the temp gauge goes up quicker.

What could be the problem or was there a problem in the first place with it not moving much and now its working properly?

any help would be great as im off on a long journey tomorrow and im worried incase its something that needs sorting before i go.

Where does the temp gauge sit when driving normally, it should be just left of centre usually and going up just to the right of centre when sat in traffic...

Depending on how yours is acting it could be a few things but sounds like youre giving the symptoms of a stuck open thermostat, although if it goes up while driving fast then it could be a blocked radiator...
N.b. any opinitons expressed above should be ignored and considered 'ramblings', under no circumstances should they be relied upon...

id say change the thermostat and coolant temp sensor

    BUT

on the 8v the stat sits behind the timing belt

a cheaper and much easier option is to fit an additional stat into the top rad hose and this has the effect of replacing the stat which is believed to be stuck open hence the over cooling of the engine

    common issue

heres a rough guide from another member with the same problem - cant recall which part it is - but i think its a Renault 5 stat u use - either way, the halfords part number is shown in the pics

Because my temp gauge is acting how it should be now (by sitting just left of center when driving normal) that it was stuck open but now its not?

Like i said for the past year its been not moving much at all just the last couple of days it seems to be "normal" can something like this happen with it being stuck open then all of a sudden operate normally?

Thank you both for the info.
