    Auxiliary diesel fuel pump

    Hello,

In my car on the fuel line that comes from the fuel filter to the fuel pump of the car, there is an electric fuel pump that was installed manually on the pipe!

Does anyone have a clue what that could be for?
It doesn’t look like a thing that the manufacturer would do, but rather it seems to have been done by some mechanic somewhere for the previous owners.
It is also not even mentioned in the Haynes book of the car.

I tried to open the output side of that pump and it indeed pushes fuel into the pile that leads to the "real" diesel pump.

If you have such in your car or may know what that is for, please let me know.

    Thanks

    Alex

Guess somebody got frustrated with trying to start up again maybe after changing their fuel filter so decided to install a secondary fuel pump before the fuel filter...

    Cheers, Paul

After looking up in various places, I found out that the Astra's diesel (pump VP44) that we know, works in other GM cars but they are all equiped with a lift pump.

Lift pump is a dumb pump that only brings a supply of fuel to the VP44 for it to distribute it to the Engine "wisely".

If the car maker has intentionally "forgot?" to install such a pump or not I don't know... but the question remains then well why would other GM cars have a lift pump and the Astra comes without it.

Larger vehicles with the VP44 use a lift pump, small cars don't need it, so long as you pressure bleed the fuel system to avoid running the pump dry.
