To remove the head you will need to,

Remove the exhaust manifold from the head
Remove the inlet manifold from the head - never done it on a LET so maybe take the head off with inlet attached?
    Remove the cambelt
    Remove the rocker cover
Remove the headbolts - may need to remove the cams first
    Then lift the head off.

There will be plugs and water pipes to remove but they will all be obvious when looking in the engine bay.

Have you done a compression test Stu? Assuming the pressure test is OK then I'd not be suspecting piston rings or valves...

my rings have gone, but compression is 180 psi on all 4

if oil is in the bores, it will give good compression.

plus the piston rings may be fine, but oil scrapers may be seeping, which will also give smoke but also good compression.

you sure your turbo isnt seeping? if theres nothing on the inlet, it might be seeping exhause side and burning off inside the exhaust.

chris my compression "apparently" last year was 120 115 110 120

as most know the car was pushing nearly 260bhp at kielder last year but a day of "spirited" driving made it start to smoke...

possabilitys could be the following, cracked internals on turbo? steam valve seals or rings.

rocker gasket need done that i know

the heads on these are pretty easy to remove, easpecially in the astras as theres loads of room.

    start by removing the cambelt
    then remove the cams
unbolt the exhaust manifold, make sure you remove the oil return feed off the block as there prone to splitting and leaking.
then unbolt the inlet manifold, i think its 8 13mm nuts.
then undo the headbolts, 55mm torx bolts.
    then pop the head off.

It shouldnt take to long, i done my headgasket in 4 hours, that was in a corsa c to and theres no room to work on the inlet side of things as its so close to the bulkhead.

But before doing that, I would check for signs on your turbo. Is it just smoking on idle? It could be first signs the turbo is going, as on modern engines its quite rare the piston rings/valve seals will be gone unless the engines been ill treated
