    Power Steering.

Today at 06.25 my power steering failed on the car whilst on my way o work nearly ,oh so very nearly putting me through a stone wall. This happened just outside my local garage who do all my work for me so i was able to park up and wait for the boss to get in to have a look. Well the looking is done and the diagnosis is a knackered motor/pump thingohmiwhatsit. But me being me I want to have a look at it myself just so I know what's what.I have (like the garage boss) looked at the fuzes and all are ok what else can I look at just to see if nout has come loose or unplugged? Is it still ok to drive it or will it do more damage to the system?

The upside to this is I now have to drive my Landrover over to my Good Ladies house, so I can take her Landrover into work so I can have her Astra so I can get myself to a course on using a table saw this after noon. I have to change landrovers because my Good Lady won't drive mine as she says it doesn't like her ( not surprising really as she kicked her the first time she got in! )

So I am having quick cup of java juice before getting into my full fancy dress to head off in my landrover to work ( booo hissss)

Do have a nice day .

Make sure the alternator is charging properly. If it's not the power steering electronics senses this & shuts down to preserve battery life.

Thank you for that, the charge light did/has stayed on. I suppose I am looking at 13. something volts input when running? It is a 1.7 diesel how can I tell which engin is in it if I need to get a new alternator?

You should be getting 14.4v. If the charge light is lit the power steering definitely won't work.
Motor factors/Vauxhall spares should be able to look up engine code by reg number/VIN number.

Thank you once again. So If my alternator is knackered by running jump leads from a good electrickery sorce, to feed the electrickery system the power steering might work, in which case it is a duff alternator and /or battery.

THIS is the reason I joined here.

No, it the alternator doesn't run properly & put the charge light out the power steering won't run.

If the charge light is staying lit & you're only getting 13v I'd definitely say the alternator is suspect.

Just put the fully recharged battery in and started her up to test the voltage output of he alternator and it came in at 11.23 volts on tick over. So not to good.

So as indicated by the knowledgeable one (SQ Man) it looks like the Alternator is knackered.

Next problem is how do I tell tell garage that it might be the alternator and not the duff PS motor/pump thingimebob without pissing them of too much?
