    What 5-dr deisel?

Ok, not for me at this stage, but we're beginning to look at changing my wife's car (currently a 51 plate Vectra Z18XE hatch, 82,000 miles).

95% town and city driving with the occasional longer trip for holidays etc.

Probably looking £4000 or so depending what we could get for the Vectra trade-in.

There's the obvious MK5 Astra hatch choice (I'd assume 1.7 CDTi 100 or maybe the 1.9 130), the Focus is in the mix too, but not sure on how anything beyond the Astra fares for reliability, servicing and repair costs etc?

    Suggestions welcome

We've got a 2001 focus 1.8 tubby diesel within the fleet, only driven it a few times but done a mix of journeys.
Engine seems very strong, had it since new and had done 166k last time i drove it, was still tight and pulled very well from a stand still aswell as mid-range. Only the second diesel engine i've been impressed with (the other being the 2.0 they put in the new passat)

We were looking at the later model Focus which I think has the 1.8 TDCi in but know nothing about it

they did three diesel engines over the mk1's time in production, an 88, 100 and 113 bhp. The one we have (from memory, I can check tonight when i go by the office or if its in the yard) is the 88bhp 'CL' model and like i said seems solid even after 166k miles and has never missed a beat (naturally we've followed the service schedule). I've no experience of the later, more powerful ones im afraid.

We're gonna be selling a few cars in the coming month, i like it enough to consider 'buying' it for myself, if thats not a good enough endorsement then i don't know what is

Golf is probably out of our budget to get a newer model, Leon we looked at but were unsure how big the boot is?

if its mainly for town driving have you thought about the corsa 1.3cdti? very economical and pretty punchy with a good bit of torque.

Needs a big-ish boot though so Corsa might not cut it...possibly too new and pricey too?

    Or a newer vectra derv?

Depends really if you use this one as "the family" car, when moving the whole herd, otherwise you could go smaller?

Or maybe a nissan offering? reliability and all that? a Note perhaps? not sure on prices though.
