    Whining rear end

    Hi all can any one help me, i have vauxhall astra 1800 convertable on 02 plate, wen u get to 50mph there is a whine from the rear is this the diff or axle or something else,

    thanks for reply, as u can see im new to this and not sure were to post stuff yet, also it makes the noise wen u take it ot of gear

    Still suggests wheel bearing Mine went a few years back and low speeds were quiet, much above 40 and the noise got progressively louder.

    Easy enough to change, about £65 for a new bearing + labour (or do it yourself).

    Jack the relevant side of the car up and spin the wheel - you should be able to feel the wheel move rough if the bearing is on the way out.

    thanks for your quick reply, wen u say £65 for bearing is this from main dealer also on a scale of 1 to 10 how hard is it and how long would it take

    rear hub bearing units are straightforward, allow 30 mins per side and on a scale of 1-10 it is a 5. remove wheel, brake caliper, disc. undo the four bolts at the back, holding in the hub unit and replace with new hub, torque and angle tighten the hub bolts and pop the caliper and disc back on and that is it
