5W30 fully synthetic should be the right oil.

5w30 is what Vxl recommend, but it might be a bit thin on a high mileage lump like yours

I would (and do) use 10w40 in all my cars - irrespective of whats recommended

a good compromise between the 2 would be 5w40 - best of both worlds

all depends how much you want to spend, and how frequently u change the oil

i do mine every 3k on car and van so the cheaper 10w40 Vxl Semi is more than adequate

I got given the wrong oil from my local motorfactors a few months ago and it was 10w40. The engine didn't like it one bit... started making horrible sounds withing 20 miles of putting it in... When i checked what oil i should have had and compared it to what the motor factors gave me i wasn't very happy. Went and got some 5w30 from vauxhall and changed it.. . within about 6-7 miles the engine was sounding right again... I'm glad it didn't cause any damage. my engine has done 83k and it seems these new engines are very picky over what oil is needed.

Your local main dealer will confirm which one (possibly 5w30). Don't just throw anything in or you will do more harm than good. The main dealer is also cheaper for most new parts and oil. At least they can check the correct fluids and parts for your specific car by a registration number. That way you can guarantee the info is correct and accurate. The handbook should also have some info buried deep inside!

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I went and got my oil from vx and the guy insisted that I use 10w40 part synth, I have just read the above post and now I'm worried.

The guy at vx said when I asked "you sure it's not 5w30" he replyed "you only use that for the first 3 years, over years the engine parts get warn and further apart and need thicker oil"

Should I be worried I've put wrong stuff in?

my car is a 2005 plate Astra H with 83k on the clock and the 10w40 was no good for it. When checking the oil life on opcom, with the 10w40 it came up with 0% life and it was only 2 days old. Changed it for the 5w30 and all has been fine since with a current oil life of 97% and its been in about 3 months now.
