Someone PLEASE help me stop my engine moving about!

Astravan 1.7 CDTi. I recently replaced the front mount for new as the rubber insert looked tired, and replaced and retorqued rear mount bolts. It felt better for a while, but a few days later began moving about again. I then just last week had the cambelt replaced, for which the side mount had to be taken off and refitted. Again, the van felt better for a day or two, but the engine began moving around loads after that. It's now worse than ever! Alternator belt squeals away when I'm reversing and sometimes when I just release the clutch. Sounds rubbish! Any advice? I just want the damn thing to stay still!

The side mounting may appear to be good when infact it is weakened, I would replace it if it were me. You can normally tell if this mount is failing by pulling off as fast as you can and the stearing will go light on one side. I recently replaced a side mount one on a 2.0L which solved this problem even though the mount rubber looked intact.

This is an interesting thread. I hope I am not hijacking it.
My engine rattles for half a second after I have turned it off. Is this normal? (I never experienced this on any of my petrol-engined cars).

I have recently had my front AND rear engine mounts replaced and I still get the above rattle on engine turn-off, so I am curious.

Yep I get the engine rattle too. Sounds gash!

I may try and replace the side mount. The front one looks like it's supposed to be allowed to move a bit, either that or they did a really poor job of designing it, cos the rubber insert looks very weak.

I get a constant squeal when reversing, sounds terrible.

Yeah it does sound a bit...tacky.

Let us know if you experience any change after replacing the side mount.
My mechanic advised me that only the front and back mounts were worn so I've only replaced them - and the 1/2 second rattle on turn off remains.
