Help, Crankshaft oil seal leak + *loud tapping*

Took my car into the garage today to have an oil and filter change.. and my mate found a leak in the crankshaft oil seal on the offside of the car.

He said that while i was getting that replaced as the seal is only a few quid but the cambelt has to come off i might aswell get the cambelt done which i will do.
Anyone know what price i will be expecting to pay, parts+labour?

Oh and about the tapping noise, it sounds like a van. Since the oil and filter change its got better but still there. Its louder the colder the engine.

When i pull away in 1st gear, the tapping starts about 2000revs, same in second at 2000revs, and in third but alot less tapping, then fourth its basically gone, and 5th no tapping. What is it??

well if he is your mate, why did you not ask him how much it will cost, i assume as he is a mate you will get a bit of a deal. with the tapping, get your mate to check the timing pulleys and waterpump whilst he is doing the belt for any wear

you need to stress that you need the idler and tensioner rollers and waterpump too if the jobs gonna be done properly. a new belt will put too much tension on the old rollers and when doing a belt change, it is sound advice to do the waterpump too. they all run off the belt

well unless they are gonna do the idler/tensioners etc then i do not see any point fitting a new belt on used pulley wheels, if it is in sound condition then just ask them to use the original belt and set the tensioner to the "used" position
