    My Astra at Thorney Motorsport

    Tuesday 23 March 2010

Got to Thorney in Milton Keynes early about 8:40 so I had a look round and took a few photos in the car park

Handed over keys at 9. I had the car lower 30mm all round on Eibach Prokit with wheel alignment included. Replaced pre-cat with Milltek downpipe, and had a Milltek resonated cat-back. Then it got Thorney custon remap. Also had my 2nd full service there before they fitted the parts.

Here is the car being set up on the rolling road

    Here's results:

Power at flywheel 205.6bhp up from 182bhp.

171.6bhp on the road up from 152bhp

Was told if I had a full sports exhaust system I would have 15bhp more, but they don't make one for the Astra 1.6 turbo. The Milltek downpipe used is the same as they put on a Corsa or Meriva VXR as the engine dimensions are the same. They used the Milltek cat back for a 2.0 SRi. The only option is to wait, or see if there is anyone who makes a custom sports cat to fit but that would be too expensive.

I thought I would have got 210-215bhp but car still feels a lot different. Power delivery feels smoother and the car pulls a bit stronger through the mid and higher revs. Where, previously, the turbo run out of puff after the mid range, I can feel the torque stays up right the way through the revs to 5000rpm. With the sport button on it's feels almost twice as quick as before.

Suspension is a lot tighter round corners now, without feeling much harsher over normal ground.

While I was there, they Tech2ed my steering wheel controls and trip compute,r which hadn't been programed since I retro fitted a CD70 Navi, for free.

Here is photo later showing car is lowered.

Am feeling the gains in the higher revs. Under normal driving, my mpg seems to have gone up 2 or 3 mpg.

When I got home and started putting my exhaust part in the loft, I noticed there was no Bluefin device. Asked them the next day. They didn't use the Bluefin but did a custom map with their computer as my 1.6 turb with a downpipe is not one that is available as a pre-set Bluefin map. Custom map is cheaper by £100.

Also as they used a 2.0 turbo SRi back box, it is still a bit under the rear skirt than I would have liked, though after a good drive it does grow an inch or so out.

The sport button is mad. feels like twice the power before but see the mpg is like 1/2 of before when its on and reved hard.

Just lowered as they said fast road setip will wear the tyres out too quick for everyday use.

Where can I get a sports cat made to fit?

    Custom remap is £399
If you get a Bluefin its £499
Installing downpipe depends on time it takes to install.

I'm aware you can get a remap cheaper elsewhere but at Thorney, they match my extended warrenty. If they break it, they fix it. Was aware that some 1.6 turbo engines had problems with piston 4 after remaps so wanted the peace of mind.

It certainly looks like they covered their arses with that dyno graph. Looks like they have just left the boost pressure standard but allowed it to hang on further up the rev range. If they had done anything less you wouldnt have noticed the difference!
You should have a look at the Courtenay site to see whats possible with a std engine. What they have given you is pretty poor for that kind of money.
