    Coupe cooling issues

Hi all yesterday me and the girlfriend went out in her coupe for a drive. After a while i noticed the temp display slowly starting to crep up at 70mph. Put the heater fans on to take some heat away from the engine and it helped abit pulled over to check radiator fan and it was all working to. Drove it home with all heaters and fans on with the gauge just above 90 to 95 at most. My thoughts was head gasket issues but leaving the car to cool right off i started her up and found the temp gauge go right up and fans kick in! Am now thinking its more electrical fault. I have changed the temp sensor as when we first got the car the temp gauge only registered when ticking over or in traffic then when driving nothing on the gauge but heaters were hot. The new sensor made no difference then but now its working ish. The cars a mk4 coupe on a W plate with the 1.8 engine any help would be great.
