which one is it? If its a mk4 there are 4 (or possibly 5, I cant remember now) bolts around the bottom of the whole selector unit. Undo them and then its free to start moving about. On the 2.2 and 2.0 turbo simply unclip the cables and it lifts out. On everything else you have to negotiate the selector rod out. I chopped the selector rod in half on my 1.6 cos I got annoyed with it when it wouldnt come off and I didnt need it again .
It would definitely go better with an engine in it

Remove the curved panel under the handbrake.

This reveals two star shaped (Torx) screws. remove both of those and lift up the Gear lever surround.

At the bottom of your gear stick, you'll see a pin that is clipped around the stick at the base.

Unclip this clip (you'll need a screw driver to do it), remove the pin and lift out the gear stick.
