    Fuel economy

    Ive got a Mk4 Astra hatch 5 door 1.4 16v.
I filled it to the brim a couple weeks ago. The petrol light is now flashing and ive done 335 miles. Isnt this pretty poor economy? Most of my journeys have either been 2.5 miles long or 15 miles long, rarely any longer than that. Mostly straight main roads with some waiting at traffic lights (the mega slow ones for roadworks) etc etc. Some journeys its late at night so i do 70-80 (i know i shouldnt) dont know how this effects economy.

As far as weight is concerned its normally me on my own or with a passenger, i have a sub in the boot but other than that its standard so not too heavy.
I might try driving 50mph everywhere but this might annoy other drivers. The service indicator hasnt showed up so cant need a service yet, think July was the last one.
Any help? As i think this works out at about 32mpg the way im driving it.

That seems pretty good compared to mine lol. My car same model does 100 miles on £20 of fuel. Giving it the full service this weekend including fuel filter.

30(ish)MPG isn't that bad to be honest. Driving constant short journeys won't be doing you any good though. Take it for a long motorway drive atleast once a week. A full service will probably see an improvement if it's been nearly a year since the last one.

Remember the colder weather will use more fuel aswell due to the ECU mixing more fuel (hence the stronger petrol smell on start up when it's cold).

I average about 35MPG out of my 1.6 doing a mix on 70% town driving and 30% motorway/dual carriageway.

Yea but you're doing alot shorter town journeys than me so you'll be using more fuel. Town driving is crap on fuel economy, especially if you're constantly stop/starting due to lights n road works.

If you did 50mph everywhere you'd probably get.............a speeding ticket

I thought 56mph was the most economical speed?

Why am i getting poor economy then? Unless i didnt brim it but the needle was all the way to the right. I used Tesco unleaded. Maybe im thrashing it too much, ill stick to changing gear at 2500rpm now.
