    New Timing Belt MK4 (1999)

    Hi guys!

Im well over due for a timing belt fit on my Mk4..

I was chatting to my mate who suggested that i need to also fit a new water pump too...

I do my own services ( Petrol/oil filter plugs, Breaks) but was wondering how technical will a belt fit, Tensioner and water pump be?

Alos ive managed to get a price for the Belt and Tensioner for £80..anyone got any idea how much a water pump may be and also if you got any reccoended places to buy these bits cheaper!?

As u can guess Im trying to save as much money as possible, but understand that the Belt needs to be done well!

    Thanks!

    Martyn

a clue as to what engine would help

general rule of thumb tho is about £70 for timing belt kit and £30 for water pump

presuming u have a 1.6 (most common engine) then its relatively straight forward - even easier on the 8v model as opposed to the 16v variant but if ur not confident then any independent garage should charge no more than 2hours labour - i reckon on about £40 an hour so all in all u should have a little change from 200 notes.

I also have to do a change on belt and water pump. I was told Gates and Dayco. Is it six of one - half a dozen of the other with these two brands? Also, price, I've seen £84 for the Dayco part. Is this reasonable? If there is a better place, than please, enlighten me. Parts cost too much in Australia.

Also, for the water pump, what is a good brand? And which do you avoid like the plague?

I will be getting it from eBay UK, as there are many more Astra's over there than here in Australia.

    Thanks people.
