    54 plate 1.8 coupe thermostat help/advice

ok, i need to replace the thermostat on my car (1.8 ) and VX charge loads for the part and i expect my local garage will chareg the earth to fit it aswell.

So i'm tempted to DIY it.

I read the haynes and it seems fairly straight foward to do (if anyone wants to correct me please feel free before i discover it half way through!)

anyways, haynes say that the 1.8 termostat has to be fitted with sealant? anyone know the make and type of sealant i need to use?

also whilst i'm down there i probably should drain, flush and replace the coolant.
can anyone tell me what type, how much and where i can get it.

    Thanks again guys

    Will

As for the sealent you just want Instant Gasket that is what i use and it is great just make sure it is sutable for water and high temp, es for coolent it all is of simaler grades nowadays and again i just use whatever i can get hold of, you can pick both up from any car accesory shop quite cheap (halfords will cost a small fortune) you could try and find a General Trafic if you have one in your area they are about the best but as i say you can get them from any car accesory shop, Price depends from shop to shop and i think (if it is simaler to the X14XE thermostat) it should take about 10 - 15 mins

Replacing the stat is very simple to do, just a case of unbolting a few bolts taking it off and bolting it up again. Really simple.

You dont have to use selant but its better if you do, silicone is okay.

Its worth flushing the coolant system whilst your doing the stat as thats very simple aswell, you can get new coolant from vauxhall youll need 3 bottles i think.

There is a very usefull how-to on here on replacing the stat.

on the z18xe, no sealant is required as the there will be a rubber seal with the part that fits in the grooved outline of the thermostat housing mating face, this will compress and seal as the bolts are nipped up.

yes mate you will have the later version Z18XE as is mine and you will find changing the thermostat very easy on this engine

just make sure you have the correct torx socket for the bolts and are careful with undoing them and you will be fine
