    ok so say ive got an error code 123456

    i need to just look at the 1234

    thats fine, but how do i know if its P1234 or B1234...etc

    what do the initial letters signify?

    and finally, the 56, or "value" is used for what exactly? what does it mean?

    thanks

    The first character identifies where abouts the fault lies.

    P = Powertrain
    B = Body
    C = Chassis
    U = Undefined

    The 1st number represents if its a generic or manufacturer code (all OBD2 compliant codes with start with a 0 "zero")
    0 = Generic
    1 = Manufacturer specific

    The 2nd number lets you identify with control has failed
    1 = Emission Management (Fuel or Air)
    2 = Injector Circuit (Fuel or Air)
    3 = Ignition or Misfire
    4 = Emission Control
    5 = Vehicle Speed & Idle Control
    6 = Computer & Output Circuit
    7 + 8 = Transmission

    The 3rd and 4th digits represents the particular problem

    The 5th and 6th digits are variables - not really used so ignore them (plus i dont 100% know the answer lol)

    So as you have revived a 2 year old post do you have a problem?
