    Coolant loss..Possible head Gasket??

Hi Guys, this has been going on for some time now and I think it's finaly down to the head gasket. I am loosing water but have no engine oil mayo but the oil is appearing in the coolant ever so slightly. Looking at the head there is a small trace of oil in the joint between the head and block just above the water pump, so I asume this is where it is failing.

Am I right to asume the above or could it be something else?

Also, is it likely to be a cracked head???

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Walesy,

Please tell us what vehicle, engine and year.

May or may not be head gasket but need more information, like the above and any changes in performance - how is it running, any white cloud of smoke from the exhaust?

    Cheers, Paul

ops, sorry it's a 2000 X reg with the y17dt engine. It doesnt appear to have lost any performance and I have not noticed clouds of smoke to be honest but it's hard to tell in the cold weather with hot exhaust fumes and cold outside air temp. I have noticed that there is small traced of oil in the header tank but nothing in the oil itself.

Try having a close look at the water pump?

Also, what I have noticed the engine temp acts funny. Any other car I have had will heat up when stationary, mine cools and gets hot when driving on the motorway or what ever...like an airlock if that makes sense.

I'll have to check for your engine but I think maybe the Y17DT has one of those oil coolers that are known to leak oil and it appears in the expansion tank as you have described.

The coolant loss could be a leak somewhere eg the waterpump. So maybe your head gasket is OK. There are tests they can do to indicate whether the head gasket is failing or not....

Sounds like your cooling system needs attention - waterpump checked and maybe a new thermostat...
