    Oil change problem

I changed my oil & filter today. When I refilled with oil the dipstick was showing that it was overfilled even though I hadn't poured much in. I removed the drain plug to let some oil out and only a trickle of oil came out. I poured more oil in to see if it would run through the engine but it didn't. The dipstick is now showing about 3 or 4 inches overfull but there is nothing in the sump as the drain plug is still out. Obviously there seems to be a blockage of some sort. Anyone got any ideas where this could be and how I can clear it?

Almost 5 litres altogether but some of that has been drained out so it's hard to say exactly.

What car is it? I'm sure the sump capacity is less than 5 litres in almost all cases.

It is less than 5 litres, it's 4.25 but that's irrelevant.
It wouldn't matter if I put 10 litres in.
The problem is that it's not getting down to the sump.

How clean did the oil look when you drained it in the first place? Was there any sludge / debris etc that could indicate a blockage or was it all fairly runny and smooth?

Have you tried actually running the engine as suggested in the service documentation so that the oil is circulated fully round the engine?

When I first drained it the oil was runny & smooth.

I don't think the service documentation recommends running the engine with the dipstick showing much too much oil and the sump empty.

Fair enough, just checked service docs and it says to pour in half the specified oil and wait for a few minutes until it has drained into the sunp. So yes there should be oil in the sump and I would say it's unlikely that putting in more than that has prohibited it draining into the sump.

However, I'm fairly certain that the dipstick gives the level of oil actually in the sump so it seems unlikely that there is none in there. The fact it now shows far too much perhaps indicates that not all the original oil drained in the first place??

Have you inspected the drain hole at the bottom of the sump to see if anything is blocking it?
