    Couple of wierd noises

First off ive had a search, but cant really find anything, and also want more opinions.

Its a 2002 1.8 mk4 coupe with 38k on the clock, full service history and was last serviced at 37k. Also says that the toothed belt and tensioning pulley were changed at 21k (16.01.2007).

Basically theres a slight tapping noise, quiet but a fast tapping. Comes from drivers side, but will try and investigate more tommorow to pinpoint where it is.

Also, when i accelerate hard(ish), and get to about 4k+ there is a whining noise, like the engine is sort of struggling, all i can explain it as is like a quiet whining of a turbo? I have never heard this before and has only come on very recently.

    Any help would be great.

    John

you need to check the aux belt tensioner, alternator, waterpump and cambelt tensioner/idlers. they could all make this noise under load

What am i checking? Or is it best to take it to a garage and get checked? Also, is it 3 years for a cambelt?

4 years or 40k miles for cambelt, whichever comes first. you are checking for play/wear noise. whip off cambelt covers and run engine and you will be able to hear the waterpump, idlers/tensioner etc. if you are unsure then get a garage to check it for you, but not a vauxhall dealer unless you take some vaseline with you

Its definitly coming from the belt area, but i cant pinpoint where. The tapping noise is coming from nearer the top of the engine nearish to the middle.

Heres a couple of videos of the tapping noise, it doesnt sound as bad as it does in the video, but you can kind of hear it.

And heres one of me revving the engine with the cam cover off, does everything look ok? And you can hear the whining noise quite well.

And heres a couple of when driving, you can hear it more at higher revs

It really doesnt sound normal to me, but any help?

listening to the revving engine, there is a very pronounced whine. can you slip off the aux belt and rev it over without the aux belt, this will rule out the aux belt tensioner and alternator, leaving only the timing belt wheels and waterpump as suspects

Right done that, which was suprisingly really easy, but it still makes the same whining noise, i take it this isnt normal then and there is something wrong?
