XBOX 360 - what is the HD for and do you need it?

What is the 360 HD for? For say, Forza Motorsport, what difference does the HD make to the game?

Music, videos etc would not concern me, I'd not be using a console for media playback, but I am assuming extra/add-on downloads must get saved to the HD?

if by HD you mean hard disk, then a few of the cars from the second forza disc are installed on to it,

its also good for saving games that may have little scratches, agreed you have to have the disc in to play but slow loading games e.g. gears of way 2, load a hell of a lot quicker when run from the hard disk
Observe the masses and do the opposite

Loading time benefit I can appreciate, very careful with my discs though

Yeah, HD as in hard disk.

HDD is essential for Forza, there is a second disc with about 2.x gb's worth of data on that has to be installed. Also the downloadable car parks are about 400mb each, if you want to play demos they can be over 1gb each.

If you just want to play and save games though and not worry about downloadable content you can get away with a memory card.

As mentioned above. The HDD is used for lots of things, media storage, same as when streaming HD movies from Zune over the net, they can be stored on the HDD first. Game saves, downloadable content is stored on it too, as well as the extra disc on Forza 3. Also mentioned above whole games can be saved to it for extra fast load times
